69 Notch

Postby DCDUBS » Fri Jul 30, 2010 11:04 pm

Recently acquired this 1969 Type 3 Notch, which I'm pretty stoked with.

Hasn’t been on the road since the late 70′s, had been sitting in a shed in Nelson until a few years ago.

Is pretty solid and original but still needs a bit of work to get it back on the road, hopefully will be all ready to go early next year.

Looks great in the pics. I never really saw it much without the cover on..... whats the plans for it?????
If it can't be fixed with a hammer then it must be an electrical problem!

Nice Notch,

Can someone answer a query on it for me please??

It has got the late guards on it, going by the fuel filler in the right hand guard, but seems to have the early indicators - I thought from about the mid sixties onwards they had the longish horizontal indicators that started at the front of the guard and finished with the chrome surround on the side.?????

Could be an 'N'. That rear reflector housing looks painted not chromed. Chrome body moulding though and no side markers. US spec cars returned to the bullet front indicators for the last couple of years, I realise this is a right hook notch, just threw that in there.

Notch is of Aussie origin and was imported into nz in 1976, it is registered as a 69, but chassis number indicates 68.

It has the 4 stud wheels, 12volt and disc brakes up front, but still has swing axle rear and the early bumpers. Seems the aussies where using up all the earlier parts.??

Plans at the moment is to get it all sorted for WOF, tidy up the replacement guards with paint to match keeping the patina look going for a while, is going to become my daily driver so no major mods just yet. A set of 2 Litre’s or gas burners would be nice.

Have been having a read of the book "Volkswagen in Australia" tonight seems that during the final production runs of Type 3's in Aussie that there were many unusual variations entering the market during the last days prior to full CKD assembly of cars. These included the new 12 volt systems and some models having the older 'bullet' shaped front indicators before converting to the wrap around style.

This may explain the oddities of my one????

Also the fuel filler is the very early edition with no interior release, manually opened with a finger pull.
