Postby lownslow » Mon Jun 14, 2010 9:07 pm

1700cc 914 type 4 engine
twin Solex 40pII carburetors
alloy fan shroud
multiple sets of type 1 cooling tin

any guidance would be much appreciated as i cant seem to get a hold of a copy of the joe cali type 4 upright conversion book

200mm, 210mm and 215mm flywheels are all OK for "12 volt" gear boxes (don't bother with the 200mm if you cn help it)

You will need to machine the flywheel centre out to fit the needle roller bearing for the input shaft.

Ditch the mechnical T4 pump in favour of an eletric pump.

Machine a alloy crank shaft Type 1 pulley to fit over the T4 fan mount.

You will need 2 sets of T4 top cylinder tin to make a set for the upright conversion.

Consider moving the T4 oil cooler.

What are your plans? if your just after a 1700 cc engine then just build a good T1 engine and be done, if your plan is to build a 2500cc or larger engine then i think it could warrent the mucking around.

What Fast68 said is true, only muck with a T4 if you are looking at 2000cc and over, as a 1776cc -1807cc T1 is a easy hassel free build. and install.

Neither can I... I know I've got it SOMEWHERE though!

http://www.nextgen-usa.com/. It's 39.90 US including shipping on his website. That's only about $60 NZ at the moment :-)

the plan is to build the 1700cc to start with then build up from there. as I am not going for all out power at the moment, just want to have some fun playing around with the car. was going to relocate oil cooler anyway as alloy shroud has no allowance for dog house cooling.

do you still want the tinware to convert your 914 motor to upright? I have all of the gear for you, pulley, tins (need some work) and oil pump block off.

I was going to do this for my bus but only got half way, then sold the bus to cactus.

You are welcome to it.

PM me.

good lots done on the engine will put photos up when i take some tomorrow.

but i have stripped all the original cooling setup off the engine, and fitted the t1 alloy fan shroud, replaced the the pulley with a modified t1 pulley, cut down the generator stand, installed oil cooler relocation plates, fitted the half complete cooling tin (riveted together just have to finish weld) , also started to make intake manifolds for the Porsche 912 solex twin carburetors.

so far its not to bad for a few hours of work, while at work. cheers boss

also cheers to hawaiijoe for the parts

how can you figure out what flywheel you have as the flywheel that was on my 914 engine has already had the machining done to it and a roller bearing fitted. the flywheel has got one grove cut in the flat section behind the ring gear. just trying to find out if i need to get another flywheel (non Porsche)

the distance from the block to the ring gear is bigger on Porsche.
